slow flowers
locally & sustainably sourced
The Flower Habit with Stella’s main flower partner is a farm less than an hour outside Brussels, called Les Enfants d’Emile.
The farm is connected to the Château d’Anvaing and is soon run as an independent non-profit. Its flowers are grown naturally, without pesticides, and needless to say they are seasonal and rather than travelling thousands of kilometres, they come from the farm next door.
The farm is able to provide flowers from as early as February through to November, with foliage and soon hellebores also available during December and January.
why is this important?
Most flowers you find in your local flower shop will have travelled thousands of kilometres before they find themselves in your hand. Many are grown in countries like Kenya or Ecuador, arrive in the Netherlands to then be further distributed to their final destination. These large scale productions and long journey times come with a significant environmental cost, including high CO₂ emissions as well as the use of strong pesticides and chemicals.
With this in mind, it is a strong focus of The Flower Habit with Stella to source flowers locally and support the slow flower movement, a movement that stands for local, sustainably sourced ‘organic’ flowers.
We are very lucky to have found such a wonderful partner to work with and are looking forward to all the flower joy we will spread together.
